The Pats Lose Out In Trading Matt Cassel

On Saturday, February 28th the New England Patriots traded the player that shows the most potential in the entire organization, Matt Cassel. Last season, Cassel was given the starting position due to MVP Tom Brady tearing his ACL and MCL tendons in his left leg, Brady's plant foot.

Cassel's proved to be a very capable quarterback, bringing the Patriots to an 11-5 record throwing 3,696 yds, 21 TD's and 11 INT's. Unfortunately Cassel's efforts went to waste when the Patriots missed the playoffs because the Miami Dolphins beat the New York Jets in the final game of the season.

The reason why letting Cassel go is a big mistake is becasue in the long run he would have been a far better asset then Tom Brady. I know, its Tom Brady and the Patriots would never turn their back on a man who has won them three Super Bowls in recent years.

But the fact it, Tom Brady is turning 32 in August and will only be getting older. He is also getting over one of the most devastating injuries a quarterback can face, tearing both ACL and MCL tendons in the knee of his plant leg. This is not an injury players can just come back from and be 100 percent all season.

Matt Cassel not only has a strong arm but he offers more mobility then Tom Brady. Cassel ran the ball for 270 yds and two touchdowns in 2008. Also, if anyone saw the Thursday night game against the Jets they will know he can throw on the run under pressure. That is where Cassel threaded the needle to Moss with Ty Law all over him. Plays like that show that Matt Cassel will be one of the leagues best quarterbacks in coming years.

It was the right move slapping the franchise tag on Matt Cassel, but it was the wrong move to trade him. If i am a general manager of a team looking toward the future, Matt Cassel is a much better asset to have over Tom Brady.

He is young, mobile, and a proven talent. Brady is just a proven talent whoes mobility is diminishing and age is progressing.

This does not mean Tom Brady is not a great quarterback, and even with this injury he is still one of the best in the league and one of the best to ever play the game. His knee is still a question though and cant be answered untill the season is well under way. No one knows how his knee is going to feel in week 15.

So what i have been implying is that Tom Brady should be shown the door and Matt Cassel should have been made the quarterback for a new era of Patriots football. As a Jets fan i am personally happy to see Cassel leave the AFC East because the Brady era will be ending much sooner then the Cassel era.
