With the transfer window in its dying hours, Tottenham have apparently entered a new race for a star player.

According to the Daily Mail, Spurs have entered the race for Clint Dempsey, the American who finished last season fourth in Premier League goals with Fulham.

This makes the amount of suitors for Dempsey three, as both Aston Villa and Liverpool have already made their desire to sign the player clear.

The move may be a shrewd move by Spurs. According to ESPN, Dempsey turned down a bid by Villa for his services, while Fulham claim Liverpool have not yet submitted a bid (though many other reports say that the Londoners rejected a Liverpool bid).

Meanwhile, Dempsey's apparent refusal to play for Fulham makes it very difficult for the club to justify holding on to the midfielder.

Hence, with both of the other bids murky at best and the club needing a sale, Spurs could be able to get a discounted rate for Dempsey and seal the move within a few hours.

On Spurs', Tottenham's move for Joao Moutinho has hit a few snags, with Spurs and the Portuguese midfielder disagreeing on personal terms.

This could weigh in the club's decision, as they will want any sort of substitute for the creativity they thought was coming their way in Moutinho; the goals Dempsey could potentially offer could be that substitute.

These last few hours should be, to say the least, interesting for Tottenham.
