Texas-Based Carthage High School About to Unveil Ridiculous $750,000 Scoreboard

Gabe ZaldivarJun 6, 2018

From the land of things that are big and football fans who are insane, we bring you news of a near million-dollar scoreboard being built...for a high school.

Sportress of Blogitude caught a whiff of something rather remarkable brewing in the depths of Texas. A high school is getting the professional treatment in the form of a rather opulent Jumbotron.

News Journal has a rendering of what the scoreboard will look like. We will let you judge for yourself if it's $750,000 well spent.

According to the report, the video screen will be, "26 feet by 44 feet — almost 1,200 square feet — and weight of 10,000 pounds."

The entire scoreboard will have over 800,000 LED's, making on par with professional scoreboards around the nation.

If you are looking for a huge fallout from parents because of the extravagance, you will not find much. The report quoted a couple of locals who were tickled pleased that the stadium was getting a giant video screen, but did find two people with exceptions.

"

'It is an extreme waste of money,' Janna McBride said while shopping Tuesday at HEB.

Another shopper, Dennis English, echoed McBride’s sentiments, saying 'It is just a lot of extra money that does not need to be spent. It ain’t about the kids; it’s about pleasing the adults.'

"

Before we get on our high horse and ride onto our podium, we have to acknowledge the school is merely keeping up with other schools around the state that have gone the same route in their score-keeping ventures.

For example, the report issues Tatum ISD spent over $400,000 on a Jumbotron of their own.

Also, the school will procure about $35,000 a year in advertising dollars because of the scoreboard. So they can celebrate a profit with the Class of 2037.

I also understand that high school football in Texas is more religion than sport. Still, I don't have to like it.

I sure hope the school has the best teaching tools, lunch program and infrastructure if nearly a million dollars is being spent so a game can "look professional."

Even then, I would still be a Grumpy Gus about the whole thing. Call me an idiot all you want, but I have this little thing in me that just won't allow me to appreciate kids playing under such high-priced pressure.

If you want extravagance and over-the-top football displays, wait until our kids get to college, where they are at least making some money too.
