Liverpool made their third purchase of the summer today. Subject to a medical, Moroccan winger Oussama Assaidi of Dutch side SC Heerenveen will be joining the ranks at Anfield.

The move was made official on Liverpool's team site this afternoon.

Of course, the immediate question cropping up in most fans' minds following the announcement is: Who?

Some of Europe's bigger names have been linked as prospective signings for the offensive flanks all summer. With the exits of Maxi Rodriguez, Dirk Kuyt and Craig Bellamy, an obvious need was created. In response, Clint Dempsey, Adam Johnson and Cristian Tello have been suggested, among others.

Yet, rarely did Assaidi's name come up. So who is he?

The 24-year-old has scored 20 goals in 68 appearances for his club team. He has also made 22 appearances for his national side.

Fans on Merseyside will be hoping their new winger makes a better transition to life in England than his compatriot Marouane Chamakh. Arsenal's forward came in from Bordeaux with considerable fanfare but failed to live up to his promise.

Foreseeably, Assaidi offers immediate competition to Stewart Downing, Joe Cole and Raheem Sterling for a place.
