"It’s an honor to sign for Manchester United. I am looking forward to following in the footsteps of so many great strikers, bringing my experience and playing my part to help the team compete for the biggest trophies in the game. I can’t wait to get started."

Even though a few loose ends still have to get tied up before the transfer becomes official, Sir Alex Ferguson sounds confident that his new offensive weapon will be available for Monday's season opener against Everton, according to Jamie Jackson of the Guardian.
"He is on his way up from London for a medical later this afternoon. We hope that goes according to plan. His agent is in discussions with [United chief executive] David Gill right about now.
"We hope all the things will be tied up, although sometimes medicals do take a bit longer. I am sure he will be available for Monday's game."
The fact United plays on Monday instead of Saturday gives them a little extra time to work out the details and get Van Persie ready to roll for his first game as a Red Devil.

The original report states Van Persie must still agree on personal terms and complete a medical exam before the deal becomes official, but the biggest hurdle has been crossed more than a month after he said he wouldn't sign an extension with the Gunners.
David Ornstein of the BBC reports the transfer fee for Van Persie will be £24 million. He's expected to sign a four-year contract with Manchester United and tie up all the other loose ends within the next couple days.
It was important for both sides to reach an agreement quickly with the new campaign set to begin over the weekend. It's unclear whether Van Persie will be ready to suit up for Manchester United right away since the deal occurred so close to the season.
Whenever he does get on the pitch, he will give the Red Devils a fearsome duo atop the formation by pairing with Wayne Rooney. The pair ranked first and second in the Premier League in goals last season with a total of 57.
Van Persie led the league with 30.
Arsenal did everything within its power to convince the 29-year-old striker to stay at Emirates. However, it became increasingly clear throughout the offseason that he wanted to move on, leaving Arsene Wenger and Co. to accept the best offer they could get for him.
