Marketing Mix is the slight favorite for this Saturday's 23rd running of the Beverly D. Stakes over a quality field of nine fillies and mares that include Mystical Star and Aruna.
The Beverly D. is a “Win and You’re In” race towards the Nov. 2 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Santa Anita so you can expect this to be a tough and contested race.
Also, the winner here could be considered the top runner on this division. The multiple G1 winning filly Winter Memories had to be retired due to a cannon bone bruise and the division is wide open.
Marketing Mix has won six-of-eight overall since she started to race on turf in July of last year, including her last two races at the Woodbine turf. She has looked impressive in those two races passing the opposition while driving clear in the final furlong.
She is in great condition and has been visually appealing in her wins but has never faced the opposition Aruna and Mystical Star, among others, have been facing constantly. Julien Leparoux returns to ride her for the sixth consecutive race.
Aruna is the only G1 winner of the group and has been running with some of the division's top contenders during her last nine races. She has traded wins with Mystical Star on her last two races and will be doing her best running on the home stretch under regular rider Ramon Dominguez.
Trainer Christophe Clement has the most wins by a trainer in this race with three and will be represented by Mystical Star. She has just three races this year with two wins that include her last over Aruna at the G2 New York Stakes.
In her previous, the loss against Aruna at the G2 Sheepshead Bay, she jumped up seconds before the start and sprung the gate doors opened in front of her and was off slower than usual for her.
She closed well even though she had to make her run from farther behind than she is used to. She was disqualified to last place due to opening the gate doors when she leapt up.
The European horses making the start will be Kapitale (IRE), I'm a Dreamer (IRE), the three-year-old filly UP (IRE) and Joviality (GB).
You might remember UP (IRE) finishing fourth in last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf where she closed well after shifting to the outside on the turn. She has been fairly consistent in Europe since and will be one of the late runners here.
I'm a Dreamer (IRE) is a runner that has run three G1 races lately and has fared well. She beat UP (IRE) on her last race the G1 Pretty Polly Stakes at 10 furlongs with 135 pounds, making the 123 pounds here feel like carrying a small bag.
Jovialty (GB) has won at 10.5 furlongs but has cut back in distance and making her best races at a mile. Her last was a very disappointing 10th place finish while Kapitale (IRE) has not run since last October and might be short for the race.
Romacaca, Upperline and Canadian shipper Stars to Shine complete the field.
Romacaca will lead the field for the first half of the race, and while she might have to make her best race to win here, it would be wise not to test her endurance by letting her take slow fractions early.
Upperline is a steady runner on lesser competition and Stars to Shine has won her two races this year after a nine month layoff and has lost to Aruna less than three lengths twice in the past. She needs to improve to win.
Romacaca will definitely set the pace but Mystical Star and Marketing Mix will be near to press her after the midway point.
It's that fact that makes closers like Aruna and I'm a Dreamer (IRE) come into the picture on the stretch.
While both Marketing Mix and Mystical Star have been wearing down opponents lately, they should offset each other in this race as they will try to take over the other before they reach the stretch.
It will be a mad dash to the finish between Aruna and I'm a Dreamer that will be won by the mare that runs closer to the leaders during the first part of the race.
Win - I'm a Dreamer (IRE)
Place - Aruna
Show - Mystical Star
