Gold Medal Count 2012: USA's Hoops and Track Success Will Seal Win over China
The United States has claimed the lead in the gold-medal count, and there is little chance the Americans will relinquish it in the final two days of the London 2012 Olympics.
A gold medal seems almost a sure thing for both the men's and women's basketball teams. LeBron James and company have been tested by Spain, but they prevailed in the preliminaries, and I expect the same result on Sunday.
Maya Moore and the women's team fought off a tough Australian team on Thursday, and I expect they will dispatch France on Saturday to extend their Olympic dominance.
Basketball isn't the only sport in which the Americans expect to capture gold in the last two days of competition. Track and field has also been pretty good to the United States.
The American men have little chance to overtake the Usain Bolt-led Jamaican team in the 4x100-meter relay, but China won't gain ground in the race for gold there.
But the American women could very well add to the gold count in the 4x400-meter relay.
Sanya Richards-Ross already won the individual gold in this event, and she and her teammates are strong contenders for the relay gold.
There are still two gold medals to be decided in wrestling on the final day, but it won't create enough of an opportunity for China to catch the U.S. These Olympic Games belong to the Americans. The United States will win the total-medal tally and the gold-medal count.
