Pittsburgh Steelers May Have a Backup QB Controversy

Phillip BuntingContributor IFebruary 23, 2009

After hearing a couple of days ago that Byron Leftwich may want to stay and play for the Steelers and that Charlie Batch wants to return, I started thinking “Will there be a backup QB controversy in Pittsburgh?” Seriously, you have got to think about this. Is it really possible that there could be a backup QB controversy for the Steelers?

Look at the situation for Byron Leftwich. He wants to start for a team at quarterback. But Byron also realizes that yes he could take the money, though it doesn't guarantee that he will start on a playoff caliber team. He displayed that he understands that the grass isn't always greener where the money is.

Byron mentioned he wouldn't mind backing up for Big Ben Roethlisberger because he knows and has experienced that the Steelers are a playoff caliber team that can make it to the Super Bowl any year.

Now look at Charlie Batch's situation, He wants to definitely return to play behind Big Ben Roethlisberger. It would be nice to have him back in the Black and Gold. But Charlie Batch is getting up there in age.

Now don't get me wrong, I love good old Charlie boy. He is a great backup QB. Can he last another season without injury? Will his age hinder him from returning? All though I wouldn't mind Byron Leftwich coming back in the Black and Gold, either.

So, what will the Rooney's do? Will they resign Charlie Batch or will they let him go? If Byron Leftwich doesn't get picked up by another team, Will the Rooney's sign him back?

Oh my all this now has me thinking about Dennis Dixon. What will become of Him if the Steelers keep both Charlie Batch and Byron Leftwich? Can the Steelers really keep four QUARTERBACKS again?

As I said before “Will there be a backup QB controversy in Pittsburgh?”

Where can I comment?
