Arsenal Transfer Rumors: Lack of Robin Van Persie Suitors Is Good News

Tim DanielsJun 7, 2018

As the number of teams interested in signing him begins to dwindle, Robin van Persie should finally realize Arsenal wasn't a bad option after all. The lack of suitors is also good news for the club as it looks to finalize its squad for the upcoming season.

John Cross of the Daily Mirror reports there are just three squads currently looking at Van Persie. They are Manchester United, Manchester City and Juventus. And progress between those teams and the Gunners has been slow.

It's been nearly a month since Van Persie said he wasn't interested in signing a new contract with Arsenal, leading to speculation that he was on his way out of Emirates Stadium. Yet, he still hasn't been moved with the new campaign right around the corner.

The fact other teams aren't willing or able to step up and make a reasonable offer to Arsenal for him should be a sign to the dynamic striker that the interest level probably isn't as high as he expected it to be when he made those contract comments.

He can't expect Arsene Wenger to simply take the first or second offer thrown his way for a player who carried the team's offense on his back for extended stretches last season. He's an elite striker and needs to get treated as such on the transfer market.

That hasn't happened yet, and therefore Van Persie remains a member of the Gunners with just over two weeks until the season is set to begin. That will make for some real tension, especially as the window gets set to close shortly after that.

Maybe the lack of potential suitors will cause the 28-year-old Dutch international to reconsider his stance. After all, it was Arsenal which gave him the chance to become a superstar in the first place and clearly still value him highly.

It's not like staying with the Gunners would stop him from playing in big games, either. Arsenal qualified for the Champions League thanks in part to his heroics last season and have made some nice additions during the offseason.

It all adds up to good news for Wenger and Co. They still have plenty of options on the table and are under no pressure to make a move since Van Persie's contract has another season. It should allow them to make the best of a tough situation.

Regardless, it seems like the saga will continue for at least a while longer.
