Hope Solo put on a great performance in the U.S. Women's National Team's 3-0 victory over Colombia to advance to the Olympic quarterfinals, but her comments on twitter may have been the biggest story of the day for the Women's team.
Solo took to twitter to sound off about frustration with Brandi Chastain and comments that Chastain made about the USA Team's ability to defend. Team USA gave up two goals in their opening win against France which led to questions about Solo and her U.S. teammates' ability to limit opponents' scoring.
The U.S. defense looked just fine in today's 3-0 shutout of Colombia to advance to the quarterfinals and Solo had some sharp words for Chastain and anyone else that seems to think team USA's defense is not up to par. Letting everyone know that Chastain doesn't know the game or Team USA.
Its important 2 our fans 2 enjoy the spirit of the olympics. Its not possible when sum1 on air is saying that a player is the worst defender!— Hope Solo (@hopesolo) July 28, 2012
Chastain represented the United States as a defender in international play from 1988-2004 and played every single minute in the '96 games when the U.S. team captured a gold medal in Atlanta. However, Solo isn't impressed by Chastain's resume as a player either, telling Chastain that the game has changed a lot since Chastain last played.
Solo is obviously pumped about her team's chances as the team enters the quarterfinals and it will be interesting to see if Team USA will continue to play the good defense that they displayed against Colombia or if Chastain's criticism will come back to play a role in the U.S. medal bid.
