James Magnussen: Aussie Swimming Star Will Steal Show in London
James Magnussen is a name you're going to know by the time London's Olympic Games are over. He isn't Ryan Lochte or Michael Phelps, but he's one of the world's fastest swimmers.
Magnussen, or "The Missile," is known for his exuberant personality outside of the pool, but he's a focused competitor once he hits the water.
He also holds the record in the 100-meter freestyle (while wearing a textile suit in the 2012 Australian Championships). Textile suits are banned now that we've had polyurethane introduced to swimwear, but his record is impressive nonetheless.
Most eyes will be on Phelps and Lochte as they battle head to head, but Magnussen will force spectators to pay attention to him. Swimming at a sprinter's pace is truly amazing to watch.
His success didn't start this swim season. He won the gold medal in the 100 free at the 2011 World Championships. At those World Championships, he was also part of a gold-medal-winning 4x100-meter relay team.
The 100 free is his best event, but Magnussen will also partake in the 50 free and two relay teams while in London. He will have four chances to prove himself on an international stage and back up his "big" personality.
You can expect him to make that happen.
Magnussen, despite his success, has the element of surprise on his side. No one really knows him, but he's certainly a noteworthy talent. He's in a great position to take home at least one gold medal.
Phelps and Lochte will get the majority of the pre-Olympic hype, but other swimmers deserve some face time as well. Magnussen will force his way into that conversation in London.
