Report: Philadelphia Eagles Expected to Meet with Ex-Giant Jeremy Shockey

A day after meeting with tight end Visanthe Shiancoe, it has been reported by NFL.com that the Philadelphia Eagles and Jeremy Shockey will be meeting Wednesday.

Some die-hard Philly fans might remember Shockey as public enemy No.1, due to the time he spent with the New York Giants and find this marriage a bit surprising.  However, it’s been no secret that the Eagles will look to deploy more two-tight end sets in 2012 as a way to improve their red-zone offense and mask the loss of All-Pro left tackle Jason Peters.

Last year with the Carolina Panthers, the former first-round pick recorded 37 receptions, 455 yards and four touchdowns, while competing with Greg Olsen for the honor of Cam Newton’s safety net. 

The fact that the Miami product is coming off fresh from a multiple-tight end offensive system led by a mobile quarterback, makes him a more desirable free-agent addition for the Eagles.

Although starting tight end Brent Celek isn’t known as much of a blocker, his responsibilities could be alleviated with the presence of Shockey along the offensive line.

Shockey will be 32 years old after August and playing in his 11^th NFL season, but would still be an upgrade over backup tight end Clay Harbor. 

Not only does he come with a physical, in-your-face personality that Andy Reid’s offense lacks, but also big-game experience that could prove to be invaluable for a relatively youthful unit.

Regardless of what happens with Shockey, the events that have transpired in the past two days tell us that Philadelphia is not satisfied with its backup tight end situation.
