First Take: Minnesota Twins Spring Notes

AlexFeb 17, 2009

It sure doesn't seem like spring, why are all of these guys gathering down south to play baseball? While it's still cold up north, it sure isn't bothering to see baseball resume, and Opening Day isn't too far off now.

The news has been pretty quiet, but nonetheless, there have been some interesting tidbits after the first two official days of camp.

** It looks as if all but seven players are now in camp. Those seven position players include Jason Pridie, Denard Span, Delmon Young, Dustin Martin, Danny Valencia, Alejandro Machado and David Winfree. The first official day that position players must report isn't until Friday, so they do have some time.

** Francisco Liriano took a little heat last year after arriving to camp late. It wasn't entirely his fault with visa issues, but he could have been a little more prompt. Yet again, this year the lefty showed up late. This time he took none of the blame, as it was a cancelled flight.

** Speaking of The Franchise, Liriano told reporters upon his arrival today that he is leaning towards skipping the World Baseball Classic. I'd be thrilled, because I'd much rather be able to follow his progress, and him staying in Fort Myers would allow him to work with Rick Anderson.

** At the conclusion of this past season, Boof Bonser had both an MRI and x-ray after feeling some discomfort in his throwing shoulder. Both came back negative, but the pain has remained. Last week, Bonser received a cortisone shot and was expected to do a bullpen session tomorrow. That currently doesn't look likely.

** Joe Mauer is working inside for the time being as he gets back into "game shape" after some time off following kidney surgery. He is still set to be fully ready come April 6 for the season opener.

** Finally, if you haven't done so, make your projections for the starting pitchers and Matt Guerrier. Jesse Crain will be up soon, and more relievers will follow.
