Arsenal Transfer News: Gunners Should Move on from M'Baye Niang

Tim KeeneyJun 2, 2018

M'Baye Niang should not be a priority for Arsenal

The 17-year-old Caen starlet scored two goals last season in 23 Ligue 1 appearances, making himself an intriguing young target and, at the very least, worthy of the trial Arsene Wenger gave him.

It's always important to build the young talent for the future, so Niang as a target was easily acceptable and more than understandable.

Until now (via goal.com):

"

Arsenal have had a bid for Caen striker M'Baye Niang rejected following the French starlet's trial with the club last week.

"

That must be the end of negotiations.

I'm all for bidding wars for impact players who can help bring in silverware, score double-digit goals or just simply help win matches. But bidding wars usually mean over-paying, and over-paying for a 17-year-old who won't help right away just doesn't seem worth it.

What's more, Arsenal's original offer was reportedly "not derogatory," meaning it was already probably a healthy amount. Essentially, Caen isn't ready to give up its star, and it will take an absurd amount of money to buy him.

Again, young talent is important—and Niang certainly fits into that category—but there are easier ways to acquire youth.

There is an endless amount of talented youngsters out there. Not all of them have already participated in a top-notch league, sure, but not all of them will cost valuable money.

Valuable money, by the way, should be spent on players who can help ease the pain of potentially losing Robin van Persie.

Finally, this isn't a knock on M'Baye Niang or the idea of buying teenagers; it's a knock on a team going out of its way to complete such a feat.

In the end, you want to be buying the young, unproven players at the lowest possible price. If someone like Niang turns out to be a stud in the Premier League, then you can go and make a serious push for him later.

But for now, there are bigger fish to fry.
