Arsenal Transfer News: Scouting Report for Latest Target Lewis Holtby

Max TowleJun 6, 2018

As rumours of Theo Walcott's possible departure build, Arsenal have been linked with German attacking midfielder Lewis Holtby, whose delicate contract situation rather mirrors that of the English winger's (via The Mirror).

With less than a year to run on his current deal, Holtby would almost certainly be available for a cut price. His current club, Schalke, should be wary of having to let him go for free next summer.

Born in West Germany, Holtby is only 21 years of age, having made his debut in German football for lower league team Alemannia Aachen almost five years ago.

He has also made a couple of appearances at international level, having previously starred for the U21 team and eventually being made captain of the side.

Having long been touted as a future star for his country, Holtby's more gradual development has left some disappointed. Nevertheless, he is an outstanding talent with a bright future still ahead.

He is not exceptionally quick but possesses excellent control and skill with the ball at his feet.

His composure on the ball is good, and he is often praised for his vision and passing.

He is most naturally a right-sided winger but can operate on either flank as well as through the middle if necessary.

Holtby has scored six league goals in 36 appearances for Schalke and has racked up a similar number in assists.

He has spent considerable periods on loan at VFL Bochum and Mainz, where he was a regular fixture in the each team's starting lineup.

For Holtby, the transition into the English game shouldn't prove too difficult, as he is a competent speaker of the language because his father is from Liverpool.

Any potential transfer would most likely cost around £10 million, a reduced price in light of his current contract situation.

But, of course, such a move would surely hinge on the future of Theo Walcott, whose future is far from certain at this point.
