Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: 3 Reasons Why Money Should Face Pacman in November
The fight every boxing fan in the world wants to see could finally happen in November, but only if Floyd Mayweather, Jr., who is serving a 90-day jail term for domestic violence, will be set free this month.
If Mayweather gets a 30-day credit for good behavior, he will be out by July 29; he already got three days credit after he was arrested and locked up in jail before posting bail. The good behavior credit is necessary to shorten Mayweather's stay in jail and will allow him to prepare and train for a November clash with Pacquiao.
Here are three compelling reasons Mayweather willย finallyย agree to face Pacquiao in November, putting his WBC welterweight title on the line.
First, Mayweather can prove to the world he is the best by beating Pacquiao despite his inability to train while serving his jail term. But even if he is defeated, Mayweather will still have aย convenientย reason why he lost due to his inability to train well because of hisย incarceration.
So, whatever happens, he will have a face-saving scenario to confront the issue.
Mayweather has always beenย concernedย about the preservation of hisย unblemishedย professional record, but if it gets tainted with a loss to Pacquiao, it would be easier for him toย addressย the issue by citing the reported unreasonableย restrictions imposed on him while serving his term in jail.ย
Secondly, because of his controversial loss to Timothy Bradley June 9, Pacquiao will likely settle for a reasonable purse split, which has been put forward ย by his promoter, Bob Arum. Arum recently favored aย proposalย by Team Pacquiao for a 45-45-10 purse sharing, telling Inquirer Sports the following:
""Manny Pacquiao has now taken the position, which I endorse," said Arum.
"If Floyd Mayweather thinks he's the greatest fighter of all time, let's do it 45 percent to Mayweather, 45 percent to Pacquiao and 10 percent to the winner."
"If Mayweather believes he can beat Pacquiao, which I don't think he believes, he'll pick up more than 50 percent that way," Arum said. "But it's up to Floyd."
"
Lastly, Pacquiao has practically run out of viable and worthy opponents, mainlyย because ofย factorsย or events that were mostly beyond his control. This includes a clash with Victor Ortiz (healing a broken jaw), Lamont Peterson (found positive for illegal drugs) and a rematch with Miguel Cotto, who is now fighting in the higher weight class.
As a result of these intervening events, Pacquiao is now having a difficult time choosing ย a viable opponent for his Nov. 10 fight schedule.
Rematches are getting unpopular among boxing fans, and the clamor for another bout with Bradley and a fourth fight with Marquez may not bring the most revenues for Bob Arum's Top Rank Promotions.
And with Pacquiao's perceived loss of appetite for boxing and his eventual transformation as a religious person, Mayweather may now seize the opportunity to take theย aggressor's stance in the next rounds of negotiations and to make sure the fight happens this year.
Of course, that is dependent on whether orย not he gets at least 30 days' credit for good behavior.
