Arsenal Transfer News: Why Olivier Giroud Won't Be a Flop at the Emirates
Arsenal's latest signing in French striker Olivier Giroud has a lot of people talking.
Any big signing usually does, but Giroud's inclusion in to Arsene Wenger's squad is one that has come after much speculation and discussion.
Some wondered whether the transfer hinted at a possible departure from Robin van Persie; others believed the transfer helped the club's chances at retaining the Dutchman next season.
But for many, the real issue around Olivier Giroud is whether or not he's going to be worth it.
Can this young, impressionable, French striker deliver on the expectations laid before him at Arsenal, or will he simply flop, like too many promising transfers have done before him?
For many Gunners fans and football followers worldwide, this the big question mark that they have over Giroud and the main reason behind their hesitance to fully embrace the ex-Montpellier striker. Giroud, to them, could well just be another Marouane Chamakh—another player that will spectacularly splutter at the Emirates.
The good news, however, is that Giroud isn't another Chamakh.
He isn't going to splutter; he isn't going to flop.
Olivier Giroud is Arsenal's best signing of the transfer window so far and provides them with an excellent attacking option to help them challenge once more for the English Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.
Standing at 6'3", Giroud brings a new dimension to the Gunners attack with his aerial skills and has shown throughout his time at Montpellier that he is more than competent in the air.
In fact, the Frenchman is more than competent across all attacking departments.
He is strong on both feet and is strong in the air. He can finish goals from close range, he can beat the keeper, he can lob the keeper. He moves well and is a great assist-worker—something that Arsene Wenger loves in his players.
Giroud is one of the more complete strikers in world football but isn't your typical goal-hungry striker. He brings others into the game. That's a great thing for the Gunners, considering they have two world-class strikers alongside the Frenchman in Robin van Persie and Lukas Podolski, as well as players like Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Gervinho and Theo Walcott.
He will make the squad better.
Whilst Giroud's full potential still remains to be seen, his skills are more than ready for the English Premier League and his recent 25-goal season at Montpellier shows that he can definitely succeed in attack for the Gunners.
Anyone who has watched the 25-year-old develop over the past few seasons knows that he isn't going to be a transfer bust and is worth every single cent that Arsenal paid for him.
He isn't going to flop, and he isn't another Chamakh.
He's Olivier Giroud, and you're going to be hearing his name for many seasons to come.
