UFC 147 Results: 7 Memorable Moments
With Wanderlei Silva and Rich Franklin's slugfest, UFC 147 proved once again that skipping a UFC PPV is never a good option.
Considering how weak the fight card was, UFC 147 was viewed as a "throw-away PPV" by both the media and the fans. But for those who ponied up the cash and watched the PPV, they were treated with an all around solid MMA card.
Champions were crowned for The Ultimate Fighter: Brasil, Fabricio Werdum made his case for a rematch with Junior dos Santos, and the Silva/Franklin sequel was everything we thought it would be and more.
These were the most memorable highlights from the UFC's throw-away PPV.
The Brazilian Herschel Walker
1 of 7Is it just me or does Francisco Trinaldo look exactly like a Brazilian version of Herschel Walker?
Regardless of whether you agree with me or not, I think we can all agree that Trinaldo can fight.
On the prelims of UFC 147, Trinaldo faced Delson Heleno, and Heleno never got any momentum in the bout. Heleno continuously tried to get the takedown, but Trinaldo's takedown defense was superb.
After landing some nice shots on the feet and brutalizing Heleno with some nice ground-and-pound, Trinaldo was awarded with the first-round TKO.
Trinaldo's an exciting new prospect to the UFC's lightweight division, and furthermore, I just can't get over how much he resembles Walker.
Fabricio Werdum TKO
2 of 7Fabricio Werdum continues to evolve his striking game.
Mike Russow's game plan going into this fight was to clinch and use his wrestling to win, because he knew Werdum's striking was on another level than his.
Once Werdum was able to break away from Russow's clinch attempts, Werdum let his hands go, and he caught Russow with a perfectly placed uppercut.
The shot dropped Russow, and Werdum poured it in on him to finish the fight in the first round.
After the fight, Werdum called out Junior dos Santos. Though his striking has improved leaps and bounds in four years, he's still not on dos Santos' level.
Rony Jason's Walkout
3 of 7It's hard to believe that somebody other than Wanderlei Silva had the best walkout of the PPV, but Rony "Jason" Bezerra's stole the show.
As Jason made his way to the ring to "So Far Away," my living room went from "Ughh...Staind?" to "Wow, this is giving me goosebumps."
With tears pouring down his face, Jason made his way to the Octagon wearing his heart on his sleeve. There's something truly gratifying about watching a man live his dream and not hesitate to show his emotions during the process.
With the crowd embracing him, Jason's entrance at UFC 147 is easily the best of the year.
Ferreira's Capoeira Kick
4 of 7Is there anything cooler than a Capoeira kick?
After watching TUF: Brasil, it was easy to see that Cezar "Mutante" Ferreira was Vitor Belfort's golden boy, and it wasn't hard to see why.
Blessed with an incredible amount of athleticism and technically sound in his kicking, Ferreira is an excellent striker.
Knowing that he had a strong background in Capoeira, I was hoping that we would get to see one of those kicks in his bout against Sergio Moreas, and he delivered. Spinning and placing a gorgeous Capoeira kick to Moreas' ear, he dropped him and injured him in the second round. But the fight was just getting started...
Moreas Stuns Ferreira
5 of 7After getting dropped by Ferreira's kick, Moreas came with a flurry towards the end of the round.
Throwing caution to the wind, Moreas charged Ferreira after stunning him with a perfectly-timed elbow.
Moreas had Ferreira hurt, and Ferreira never looked the same following the second round onslaught.
In the third round, he was timid, and had he not dropped Moreas in the third round with a straight left, Moreas might have walked away with the decision victory.
Brazilian Crowd
6 of 7Altogether now, "It's time!"
From the opening prelim to Bruce Buffer's main-event introduction, this Brazilian crowd was engaged. It's one of the best crowds I've ever seen, and it made the event that more special.
There's been so much talk heading into UFC 147 about the fight card luster, or lack there of, but these Brazilians didn't care.
They chanted throughout the fights, they applauded great efforts and they were well-educated on what was going on. The crowd impressed me so much that I instantly had to add watching a UFC event in Brazil to my bucket list.
Silva/Franklin II
7 of 7We all knew this fight wasn't going to disappoint.
How could Silva and Franklin be a letdown when all they do is move forward and trade strikes? After watching Clay Guida run away for five rounds on Friday night, Silva and Franklin traded power shots throughout the fight, and it was the worth the PPV price alone.
Franklin's movement never looked so good, and Silva, as always, pushed forward with his relenting pace and nearly finished Franklin in the second round.
Perhaps the best part of the fight came in the last minute of the fight. After gassing himself out trying to finish Franklin in the second, Silva was saving up his energy for one last Hoorah. With the crowd anticipating his flurry, Silva dug deep and exploded on Franklin in the last minute.
The two traded blows until the horn sounded, and though the crowd was disappointed Silva lost, they admired his heart and warrior mentality.
