Arsenal Transfer News: Olivier Giroud Is Lethal Contigency Plan for Gunners

Ian HanfordJun 22, 2012

Arsenal seems to have Olivier Giroud locked down for next season. The move comes in the middle of Robin van Persie's seemingly endless debate about his future.

The Gunners can't rely on van Persie's loyalty at this point. Giroud gives Arsenal two starting-caliber strikers. At this point, he is van Persie's backup but that could change at any moment.

Not only is van Persie contemplating where he'll play football next season, but he's a health risk even if he does stay put. Giroud's services will not go to waste in either situation.

Adding a talented piece of insurance is smart of Arsene Wenger and the Gunner brass. The English Premier League is constantly shifting, and one slip-up can knock you down the table by a few pegs.

Now, even if they do lose van Persie's dynamic striking ability, all is not lost.

Giroud scored 21 goals and had nine assists for Ligue 1's Montpellier last season. He's only 25, and his physical style would translate very well to the EPL's blue-collar playing style.

His main attribute offensively comes through the air. He stands over 6'3'', and he's a constant threat to score on set pieces. Giroud's rugged stature makes him very tough to jostle in the box, and he isn't afraid to bang bodies.

Arsenal's ideal situation sees van Persie and Giroud playing on the same side. Wenger could either institute a 4-4-2 formation or use Giroud as a super-sub in a one-striker format.

Either way, the possibilities are endless.

Depth on Manchester United and Manchester City demands Arsenal's continued rebuilding. Adding a player of Giroud's caliber is necessary if they want to keep up in England's ultra-competitive league.

Giroud will be a big hit in Emirates Stadium next season.

If van Persie decides to stay, they could combine for 50 goals. If he leaves, Giroud could start and score 30.

I'd say that's a pretty fair backup plan.
