Marlon McCree Chooses Denver Over Buffalo

Joe RogersMar 9, 2008

Free agent safety Marlon McCree has signed with the Denver Broncos.

McCree, released by the Chargers last week, has 16 career interceptions.

McCree is set to compete for the starting safety job with veteran John Lynch. Lynch, who reconstructed his contract to stay in Denver, should give McCree a nice challenge heading into the preseason.

Denver and Buffalo were the two teams McCree was interested in. But for anyone who watched McCree's press conference in Buffalo, it seemed he wanted to stay there. He expressed interest in staying with Perry Fewel, his first defensive coach in the NFL, and wanted to play SS in the Bills system.

So why didn't the Bills sign him?

Simple. Bryant Johnson is commanding all of Buffalo's attention.

Earlier this week Buffalo missed out on Ben Troupe of Tennessee. Now they miss out on McCree.

Bryant Johnson, who will fill a much needed hole, has yet to sign a contract with Buffalo. The most logical reason he hasn't is because of the ridiculous numbers being passed out to average receivers like Javon Walker and Bernard Berrian, who were signed to superstar contracts.

It seems likely that Buffalo won't make any major moves until a Johnson contract is finalized or he signs with another team.

However, McCree should be an immediate upgrade to Denver's pass defense.

If McCree doesn't win the starting spot, he should provide much-needed depth on the roster. At worse, he will be able to play in rotation with Lynch, who is 36.
