Chavez Jr vs. Lee: JC Jr. Will Taste Defeat for First Time
It took Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. 90 fights to record a loss; his son will get his first in his 47th bout tonight against Andy Lee. Chavez Jr. is in the ring against a tough, fundamentally sound, hard-punching middleweight.
This is probably the toughest opposition he's faced, and though he'll make a good account of himself, Lee is a force to be reckoned with.
Lee brings a formidable punch, and solid mechanics into the fight. He is not only one of the few middleweights that are in Chavez's height range, but Lee is two inches taller than Chavez at 6'2". He isn't just big; he knows how to use his reach.
He has stinging one-punch knockout ability. Check out this video; the KO at 5:52 is pure accuracy and power:
JC Jr.'s defense is still not a positive piece of his game. He simply isn't difficult to hit, and for a accurate, strong puncher like Lee, that will spell trouble for Jr.
Chavez won a majority decision over Sebastian Zbik a year ago, but as you can see in this video of the first round, Zbik landed clean shots.
To Chavez Jr.'s credit, he took the shots well. The same was the case against Marco Antonio Rubio in February, but the difference is that neither of those two fighters are as strong as Lee.
Zbik has only 10 KOs in his 30 wins. Rubio has an impressive KO record with 46 of his wins coming by KO, but if you saw the two of them in the ring together, it was clear who the stronger man was.
Chavez Jr. moved him around the ring at will with his bulk. That won't happen in the ring with Lee. He's too skilled, too strong and he bangs the body almost as well as JC Jr.
That is the weapon Chavez Jr. generally brings to the table that his opponents can't match. Lee throws punches to all areas, and body-punching is certainly a part of his attack.
Lee isn't a perfect fighter, but Chavez's lack of head movement will make Lee look great.
The expected very pro-Chavez Jr. crowd will leave Sun Bowl Stadium disappointed, as Lee puts his name on the boxing map tonight at the expense of Chavez Jr.
