Mayweather vs Pacquiao: Superfight Must Happen to Overshadow Bradley Decision

Sam R. QuinnJun 7, 2018

If Bob Arum ever wants the boxing world to get over the controversial decision that awarded Timothy "Desert Storm" Bradley a split decision victory over Manny Pacquiao, he needs to make sure a bout between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather comes to fruition.

Boxing has one heck of a black eye at the moment, and the only thing that will put some cover-up over that black eye is to schedule a Pacquiao-Mayweather superfight.

Of course, Pacquiao's "loss" is a huge blow to the prospects of that happening. Not just because Mayweather now has the opportunity to play the "Why should I have to fight a guy who just lost to Timothy Bradley" card, but because there is the possibility of a Pacquiao-Bradley rematch.

The rematch would happen in November. If that fight takes place, and Pacquiao wins, we'd likely be forced to wait another six months after the rematch before he is fully ready to fight Mayweather. That means we wouldn't see a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight until almost a year from today, if it happens at all.

Arum said that he won't schedule a rematch unless a full investigation is launched by Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto. Take that with a grain of salt though, because this is a man who famously made the claim, "Yesterday I was lying; today I am telling the truth."

A fight between the top-two pound-for-pound fighters in the world would draw an audience that the sport of boxing hasn't seen in some time. It would make people forget all about the heinous, bogus, down-right wrong decision made in the Pacquiao-Bradley fight—for a little bit, at least.

Rumors regarding the prospective bout between Pacquiao and Mayweather have been swirling for almost years now. It will be a disappointment of monumental proportions if the fans don't get to see it.

A failure to schedule the fight would be like Muhammad Ali never fighting Sonny Liston. To put it in other terms, it is the equivalent of a league failing to pit the two best teams against each other in the final match-up of the year.

There's something inherently wrong with not pitting the two best competitors in a sport against each other. It's just not right to deprive the entire fan base of something so exciting.

The Pacquiao-Bradley debacle is one of the momentous boxing occurrences in recent memory. A rematch between the two won't make people forget about what happened on June 9 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The only thing that will make this go away (at least somewhat) is a bout between Pacquiao and Mayweather.

People may never forget about what happened following the Pacquiao-Bradley fight. Boxing is currently in the doldrums of professional sports in terms of integrity and true competition after that fight.

Arum made this statement during a post-fight interview as per ESPN:

"

"I've never been as ashamed of the sport of boxing as I am tonight."

"

If he truly means that and aims to do something about it, he needs to schedule the fight that the boxing world has craved for so long.
