However Lambert may come under opposition from former club Norwich, where new manager Chris Hughton is also keen on the 23-year-old. Both Lambert and Norwich know the player well; Naughton played for the Canaries on loan last year, starting 29 games for the club.
The rumour should be welcome news for Villa fans, most of whom were not impressed by the performances of Alan Hutton at right-back last season. The move shows that Lambert is already aware of the problems the team has and is making moves to rectify them
The rumoured transfer fee of £4 million for Naughton is not too hefty and continues Villa's recent tradition of building young, British talent.
With Ciaran Clark looking ready to break into the Villa defence on a regular basis, Naughton can form part of a younger, fresher defence for Villa.
In terms of ability Naughton is a definite upgrade for Villa at right-back. He has a good range of passes and is extremely comfortable on the ball. These attributes are underlined by Naughton's solid overall speed.
On the downside, the former England under-21 international is not a very physical player and can appear to be a bit lightweight. While he is accomplished going forwards he does need to work on the defensive side of things.
At times for Norwich last season he was guilty of allowing the winger too much time and space before closing them down. However this did not happen on a regular basis and overall Naughton had an excellent campaign.
Naughton will also bring some useful versatility into the Villa defence due to his capability of playing on the left side of the back line as well as the right.
Villa fans, what do you think of Naughton potentially signing for the club? Post your comments below.
