Arsenal Transfer News: Peter Hill-Wood Smart to Say Club Won't Overpay for RVP

Sam R. QuinnJun 11, 2012

Sometimes a player just isn't worth the exorbitant amount of money that he may command.

Peter Hill-Wood seems to feel that way about Robin van Persie. The Arsenal chairman recently said that he won't break the bank to retain the star striker who scored 30 Premier League goals for the Gunners last season.

He can't be blamed for not wanting to shell out the massive amount of cash that may be necessary to retain van Persie. Hill-Wood said this, as per Goal.com:

"

“He is vital to us and has been an extremely good captain,” Hill-Wood told The Sun. “But if somebody comes along and offers Robin £250,000 a week then I am afraid we cannot compete with that. With players, you never know what they are going to do."

"

That's a great move after van Persie's father, Bob, said that moving to Manchester City, Barcelona or Real Madrid is simply not an option for the 28-year-old Dutchman.

Bob van Persie said this a few days ago, as per Goal.com:

"

“Manchester City is not an option. It's impossible to play for another club than Arsenal in England,” he told Spanish daily Mundo Deportivo.

"It's not logical to go to Barcelona. They already have Lionel Messi over there. Real Madrid also doesn't fit into the picture."

"

If there is any truth to his father's statements, Van Persie isn't going to be leaving for Manchester City, Barcelona or Real Madrid.

That plays right into Arsenal's hand, as there aren't many other clubs who have the combination of financial means and appeal to bring in van Persie.

Two clubs that could feasibly sign RVP, under ideal circumstances in a perfect world are Chelsea and Paris Saint-German. Neither of the two teams have been seriously linked to van Persie in the recent weeks, and this is just meant as an example of van Persie's lack of leverage in the contract talks.

Chelsea has the prospective funds necessary to bring him to Stamford Bridge, but the Blues don't need his services after signing Eden Hazard, nor does it seem to be a likely landing spot for van Persie.

Paris Saint-Germain has the money through the Qatar Investment Authority, but they aren't the team for van Persie. The stage they play on doesn't nearly meet his standards, and it's hard to believe Ligue 1 silverware is the kind he is looking for.

Maybe Hill-Wood is laying down the law in his most recent comments. He could be trying to show RVP that Arsenal has the leverage when it comes to the contract.

Van Persie says he wants silverware on his mantle. But, he doesn't want to go to a place where he could get it. That doesn't leave him with much control over the situation. It seems like he just wanted to give the Gunners a wake-up call and try to persuade management to surround him with higher quality players.

Hill-Wood is indirectly pushing the issue on van Persie.

RVP doesn't want to go to any other club that can afford him, but he wants to see Arsenal bring in better players.

After the European Championships, the two parties need to sit down and work out a deal, as a new contract appears all but inevitable at this point.
