Arsenal Transfer News: Gunners Right to Go for Quality Not Quantity in Offseason
Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis is right to come out and say that the club will be shopping for quality instead of quantity this offseason.
This announcement comes on the heels of Robin van Persie telling Arsenal brass that he only wants to come back to the Gunners if they bring in players who will give them a good chance of winning some silverware in the near future.
Gazidis said this, as per guardian.co.uk:
""The key for us is not the volume of signings we might make but that the signings we make add something to the squad. That is something Arsène [Wenger] thinks extremely carefully about and for all of the pressure he is placed under, he tends to make good decisions."
"
Some clubs choose to go for a larger amount of less skilled players, but Gazidis has chosen the opposite route, and it will pay off for Arsenal in the long run.
This is all obviously catered to Robin van Persie—and it should be—as he put the team on his back for the entire season, dragging them away from a catastrophic meltdown in the process. If he'll only stay if the team brings in new talent, then the team needs to bring in some new talent because they can't afford to lose his services.
But it isn't just a good idea as a ploy to keep RvP on the pitch at the Emirates. It's a good idea for the present and future of the football team as a hole. Even if van Persie was leaving anyway, Gazidis would be right to hand pick a couple of top-tier players, as opposed to slopping together five or six decent men.
He already started this revolution back in April when he signed star Lukas Podolski. That doesn't seem to be enough for van Persie's liking, though. That means Arsenal management will need to bring in another player of star quality to satisfy van Persie's hunger for surrounding talent.
But who will it be? The answer to that question doesn't matter, nor is it known yet. However, at least one more premier player needs to be brought to Holloway if the Gunners want to win their first FA Cup since the 2005 term.
Van Persie, Podolski and one more great player would bring their dreams to fruition. They would have a trio of highly formidable players on the roster who would immediately and definitively put the Gunners in better shape than they started last season in.
Gazidis needs to do whatever it takes and round up any amount of cash necessary to bring in one more player to give Arsenal some confidence heading into next season. He's sure to get the job done, though, as he knows as well as anyone that Arsenal fans could be calling for his head if the club doesn't have any silverware on the mantle sometime soon.
