Nebraska Football 2012: Huskers' Alternate Uniform Opponent Narrowed Down

Matt Zvolanek@MattZvolanekCorrespondent IIJune 8, 2012

There has been much talk throughout the entire state of Nebraska about the alternative uniforms over the last couple of months—mainly because it's almost summer and there's little else to talk about.

Over that time, many people have drawn up what they think or want the Huskers to don come game day.  But besides what the uniforms look like, another debate has emerged.

Against what team will the Huskers wear their new threads?

An answer appears to be closer thanks to an article by Sam McKewon of the Omaha World Herald, published on Wednesday. In it McKewon interviewed Nebraska Athletic Director Tom Osborne about the aforementioned uniforms.

Osborne, it appears, is one of the few who know when the Huskers will run out of the tunnel in something never before seen in Lincoln.

The article goes on saying, "He's (Osborne's) holding off an announcement because of the visiting school, which could wear its own alternate uniform...."

That narrows down the list of potential opponents quite a bit.

We can automatically rule out the games against UCLA, Ohio State, Northwestern, Michigan State and Iowa, because those are all road games.

Next, we can throw out the games against lower-tier teams like Southern Miss, Idaho State, Arkansas State and Minnesota.  Surely, Osborne wouldn't waste such a rare occurrence on an almost guaranteed win for the Huskers.

No, he would reveal the new uniforms against a marquee opponent, say Wisconsin, Michigan or Penn State.

As quoted above, Osborne is holding off on announcing the opponent because it might wear its own alternate uniform on the road.  Only one team had an alternate road uniform last year.

That would be the University of Michigan Wolverines.

It's not a guarantee, but Michigan is who I would put my money on to see Nebraska's new threads.

One thing that's guaranteed is if the Huskers lose, regardless of who they play, the new uniforms will never see the light of day at Memorial Stadium again (see the all-white unis).
