Ricky Seals-Jones: Recruit Making Big Mistake by Spurning Longhorns

Ben ChodosJun 2, 2018

Rick Seals-Jones is not doing himself any favors by rescinding his verbal commitment to play football for Texas.

According to Max Olson and William Wilkerson of ESPN.com, the star recruit is no longer sure that he will attend college in Austin.

As Olson and Wilkerson note, the decision does not necessarily mean he will not play for the Longhorns, but he is now opening himself up to offers from other schools.

Seals-Jones attends Sealy HS in Sealy, Texas. He is the top-rated wide receiver and the No. 18 overall prospect in the 2013 class, according the Rivals.com. He has incredible size for a wideout at 6’5” and 220 pounds. He played wide receiver as a sophomore and hauled in 31 catches for 512 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Since then, he has played quarterback and will continue to do so in his senior season.

Seals-Jones is not just a versatile football player, he's also a versatile overall athlete.

One of the big reasons for his wavering is his desire to play both football and basketball at the collegiate level, according to Jeff Howe of the Austin American-Statesman.

Howe claims that LSU and Texas A&M are the two schools with the best shot to pry Seals-Jones away from the Longhorns. However, as Howe notes, none of the three schools would object to his wish to play both sports.

There does not seem to be a firm reason for Seals-Jones to go back on his word at this point, other than his own indecisiveness. He is a young man, and uncertainty about his future is perfectly acceptable at this point in his life. But Texas is the right place for him to maximize his talents, and he does not want burn too many bridges to Austin.

He is a high school football star in Texas, and he has the chance to be a two-sport legend if he stays in-state. That leaves Texas and Texas A&M, and there is no doubt which school has better athletic programs.

Mack Brown and Rick Barnes are two excellent coaches that can help him achieve his goals as a player and a person. He will be surrounded by some of the most talented athletes in the nation and will really have a chance to set himself apart.

He is limiting his potential by possibly walking away from the Longhorns. Hopefully for himself and for Texas, he will make nice before it is too late.
