Belmont Stakes Draw 2012: Horses Who Got Best Possible Positions

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2012

While post position isn't as important at the Belmont Stakes as the other two legs of the Triple Crown, history suggests there are some posts that should be coveted.

Favorite I'll Have Another was burdened with the No. 11 post on Wednesday, which has only placed once in the past 10 years.

But who came out on top in the post draw at Belmont Park?

Let us examine.

3. Dullahan

Dullahan not only has a prime post position at the Belmont Stakes, but he's also a strong horse. He finished third at the Kentucky Derby, won the Blue Grass Stakes in April and placed second at the Palm Beach Stakes in March.

The No. 5 post position has placed three times since 2002, and I expect the consistent Dullahan (who has placed in seven of his nine career starts) to give I'll Have Another a run for his money.

2. Five Sixteen

The No. 7 post has placed four times since 2002, so Five Sixteen has that going for him.

The bad news? Five Sixteen only has one victory in six career starts, and that was at the Aqueduct maiden in March. In his first allowance race in April, he finished fourth. The field will probably overwhelm him, but the post position could allow him to inch at least a little closer to the front of the pack.

1. Atigun

Atigun isn't a very strong horse in the field. Although he did win the Churchill Downs allowance on May 5, he finished a distant fifth at the Arkansas Derby and 11th at the Rebel Stakes in March.

Nonetheless, Atigun has the historically best post position in the last 10 years. The No. 4 post has placed four times since 2002, winning the race twice.
