Nobody is off limits, from referees to the occasional reporter who asks a question Tortorella deems unworthy of an answer.
In an interview with NBC's Bob Costas, which aired Monday on Costas Tonight, Tortorella explains some of his actions while keeping a cutting tone towards media members who he feels have different goals than his.
"I'm not saying I did it the right way," said Tortorella in reference to his press conference style. He said:
I'm not looking to disrespect people, but I also have a tough time answering questions that really they have the answer to. It's to fill their blogs, to fill their 'tweeters' or whatever you wanna call that stuff, the Twitter accounts. I'm not too interested in the social media. I'm wrapped up in the hockey club at that time. That's my only focus.
In the aftermath of the team's elimination in the Eastern Conference finals, Tortorella made some news of his own when he referred to reporters that don't like the team's style as "idiots." In the Costas interview, he refused to back down from the criticism.
"I don't take anything back. There are a couple of reporters there that I do think are idiots. There has to be an accountability there from the reporters also, as far as how they present themselves and go about their business. It's easy to say 'I'm sorry' but I'm not sorry for most of the things I've said."
As Rangers fans well know, this is vintage Tortorella. His brash style is the thing you either love or hate about him. And honestly, it doesn't seem he cares either way.
