Tomas Kaberle: Should He Stay or Should He Go?

Brandon WarnesFeb 6, 2009

Discussions about Kaberle have gone on ever since he started out in the league. Why doesn't he shoot enough and why is he such a good skater? Now people are talking about whether he should remain with the rebuilding Maple Leaf team or go elsewhere.

On one hand, Kaberle is a great player and a great part of any team. He can quarterback your power play, make a great first pass and carry the puck just as good as anybody. Also he has a reasonable contract that is affordable and attractive to many teams.

On the other, he hasn't been having as great a season as he is used to and many people feel he's worn out his welcome in Toronto. Many teams want him because of the reasons he should stick around in Toronto, which means they could get a good deal in return for him.

With the deadline coming, many teams are looking to add depth to their roster and improve in certain areas so they can make a run for the cup.

Would it be difficult to move Kaberle? Yes and no. Yes it would be difficult because he has a no trade clause and would have to okay any trade presented to him. Burke has also said numerous times that he won't ask Kaberle to waive it.

However, if the call was made and the right deal was in place, I'm positive Burke would ask him to waive his no trade clause and okay the move.

It wouldn't be hard to move him because so many teams seem interested in the kind of player he is and Kaberle ideally would have to pick at least 10 teams he'd want to go to if a deal was to be made.

So should Toronto keep Kaberle? Is he the future of the team and part of the plan going forward? Or should they cut ties with him and trade for future considerations? It'll be interesting to see what transpires come Mar. 4. Whether Kaberle stays or goes remains to be seen.
