Chelsea FC: Gregory Van Der Wiel Tempted by Possible Chelsea Move
Van der Wiel plays at right back for both club and country, a position that many Chelsea fans believe needs to be strengthened for the coming season.
The 24-year-old Dutchman has played a key role in Ajax's dominance of the Eredivisie this season, providing an influential presence both defensively and occasionally on the attack.
When asked by Sky Sports reporters whether an offer from Chelsea might turn his head, van der Wiel responded:
Yes of course, it is a beautiful club. I haven't heard anything from my manager so it's just rumours I think. We'll see. I watch a lot of football, Chelsea didn't have the best season but they won the Champions League and that was a great performance.
Obviously, at this stage a lot still has to be decided and talked through in order to bring the defender to Stamford Bridge.
But if we've learned anything as fans of the beautiful game over the years, it's that if a world class player openly shows an interest in moving to a club, usually that side will do everything within their power to bring him in.
If van der Wiel leaves Ajax for England, this would continue the trend of the Dutch legends providing the Premier League with some of its most notable figures.
Suarez, Bergkamp and Vermaelen are just a small handful of players who have made the jump from de Godenzonen to the Barclays Premier League.
Will Chelsea sign van der Wiel this window?
This season could see two more Ajax defenders following in their footsteps, with captain Jan Vertonghen seemingly set to move to White Hart Lane this summer.
As for this particular deal, nothing is set in stone yet, but this possible signing would add to the plethora of brilliant young talent that Chelsea are bringing in this summer.
Brazilian striker, Hulk and Belgian midfielder Eden Hazard have made this a very prosperous transfer window for Chelsea already.
The addition of van der Wiel to the list could see Chelsea becoming an almost unstoppable force within the English domestic system next year.
For now though, we will have to sit back and watch what I'm sure will be yet another very interesting transfer saga surrounding the Blues.
