Arsenal Transfer Rumors: Gunners Must Find Better Option Than Steven N'Zonzi

Mike ChiariJun 7, 2018

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is hard at work to improve his squad during the transfer window. He has already secured Lukas Podolski from Cologne and is trying to keep Robin van Persie in the fold as well.

One move that wouldn't make a significant difference, however, is the Gunners' supposed interest in Steven N'Zonzi.

According to Mirror Football, Arsenal is set to make a $6 million bid for the Blackburn midfielder. The Rovers are going to be relegated for next season, so N'Zonzi is quite likely to be on the move despite the fact that three years remain on his contract.

N'Zonzi netted just two goals and added five assists at Blackburn this past season. While the 23-year-old Frenchman has some potential and room to grow, he wouldn't be a good fit for the Gunners.

N'Zonzi is the type of player who is decent at a little bit of everything, but doesn't excel in any particular area.

His offensive game is very simple and uninspiring. While he can be an asset defensively, he is prone to mental lapses as well.

Considering that Arsenal has a solid group of midfielders including Alex Song, Theo Walcott, Aaron Ramsey, Tomas Rosicky and others, it is difficult to see where N'Zonzi would really fit in.

Mirror is also reporting that the Gunners have interest in Javi Martinez of Athletic Bilbao and Yann M'Vila of Rennes. Both would make for solid additions and they would likely be much bigger assets than N'Zonzi.

While N'Zonzi has the advantage of having played in the Premier League, you pretty much know what you're going to get with him. At least Martinez and M'Vila would bring the element of the unknown with them.

The Gunners performed admirably in the EPL this past season, but they have a lot of ground to make up if they hope to catch Manchester City and Manchester United.

Arsenal finished in third, but was 19 points behind both Man City and Man U. Impact moves need to be made rather than lateral moves such as nabbing N'Zonzi.

Bringing in Podolski is a fine example of a transaction that should pay major dividends for the Gunners, but N'Zonzi's contributions would be negligible.

If he is going to get $6 million, he should be an important player on the squad. N'Zonzi seems like he's just going to be a guy on the pitch without much of a bearing on Arsenal's success.

The Gunners are going to be very active throughout the transfer window, but there is no need to jump at an inferior option.

N'Zonzi wasn't a particularly good player for a Blackburn squad that was pretty devoid of talent. If he couldn't stand out with the Rovers, then the odds of him doing so under the pressure of the Arsenal faithful are pretty low.

There is no question that not every transfer can involve a star player, but N'Zonzi should be well down the list in terms of complementary players as well.

Several players of interest are on the market and waiting for offers from Arsenal, but N'Zonzi simply shouldn't be one of them.
