Two years ago, the Lady Gators won one game in the SEC—ending the season on a 14-game losing streak. They seemed to be used to losing. This subsequently lead to the firing of Carolyn Peck, who came to Florida with a National Championship under her belt. Foley went out and brought in the best and it worked.
So, Foley and his team searched for some new blood and he found it in an old Gator, Amanda Butler. Foley searched for some great young talent and it just happened to be a player that former Gator Coach Carol Ross had coached.
Butler, a fireball in her own right, seemed to be exactly what the program needed—exactly what Sha Brooks and Marshae Dotson seemed to need. These seniors were Peck's recruits, but their play is now just like Butler's.
Brooks is leading the team with 15.3 points, 5 assists, and 1.9 steals. Dotson leads the team in rebounds with 6.9 and 13.0 points a game. However, Brooks and Dotson are different players. They are leading this team into a special season and hopefully, into a championship ending.
We have a freshman, Lucas, leading three-point percentage with 56.2 percent. This freshman gives me hope in the program's future. Then, there's Sorenson—a JUCO transfer from Jacksonville that's playing with confidence and contributing almost 9 points a game.
They are all playing good, confident ball. They are putting teams away early and playing with intensity during the process.
Now, some may not like Women's College Basketball and I may have been one of them. But, Summit and her teams cured me of that a long time ago.
With the emergence of UConn, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, Rutgers, and Oklahoma and successful SEC teams like LSU and Georgia, I am hooked. Women's basketball has come a long way and I am glad to have witnessed the transformation.
I have always followed my Gators and I can now say that I have never seen this much excitement over our women's program. Great job, Amanda Butler!
You are my Billy Donovan of women's basketball. This team is going places. They are ranked 12th—higher than Tennessee. Somebody pinch me!
I can't wait to see you in the big dance. It's your destiny. I am sure of that. And, to your game with Tennessee on Sunday, I will be there. And, I will be the loudest one there...because I remember the lean years.
