Bill Self's Next Great Recruiting Class

Jordan LanningFeb 2, 2009

The Kansas Jayhawks' rebuilding year has been a smashing success. I honestly wouldn't have guessed the 'Hawks would be 17-4 at this point.

They have been successful with no seniors getting significant playing time. Sherron Collins and Cole Alridge have been the stars of the season, and they are just juniors and sophomores respectively.

So how is coach Bill Self able to do it? Recuiting.

There has been nothing but high profile, McDonald's All-American's suit up in Jayhawk uniforms.

Whether it was Julian Wright, Brandon Rush, and Mario Chalmers, or Darrell Arthur, Sherron Collins, and Cole Alridge.

Coach Self is one of the best recruiters in the country. The '08 recruiting class didn't have any big names coming out of high school. But the Morris brothers and Tyshawn Taylor have been great.

The Jayhawks were also able to recruit the best junior college players in the nation. Tyrone Appleton and Mario Little were the best JuCo players last year and look to do the same for the Jayhawks.

The '09 recruiting class looks like it could be very strong. There has only been two commitments so far, but those two could become the next studs for Kansas.

The 18th-ranked prospect according to rivals.com is Thomas Robinson. Robinson is a solid 6'8", 222 pounds and will fit well down low for the Jayhawks.

Also committed to Kansas is Elijah Johnson. Johnson is the 27th-ranked recruit according to rivals.com. Elijah is a 6'2" point guard and could get significant playing time as a freshman.

The No. 1 overall recruit according to rivals.com is John Wall. He hasn't committed anywhere yet, but it looks like he will either be going to Kansas or Memphis.

John Wall most likely will be a one and done type player, but he will make a huge addition to whichever team he decides to go to. Wall is a point guard and with Elijah Johnson coming in and Tyshawn Taylor already here I wonder wear Wall will fit.

If Wall goes to KU he will most likely split time with Tyshawn Taylor, and Elijah Johnson would be the odd guy out.

I expect next years team to be contending for the Final Four and possibly the National Championship Game.
