Nebraska Husker News and Notes for Feb. 2, 2009
Husker News and Notes
California prep linebacker Eric Martin commits to the Huskers' 2009 Recruiting Class.
"โI talked to my family,โ Martin said about Sunday nightโs conversation with those close to him. โWe were looking at as far as depth chart, as far as [playing time], how I fit in with the coaches, stuff like that... To be honest, they thought Nebraska was going to be the last choice.
โI told them why I was committing to Nebraska. I liked the other schools too, but Nebraska is more of a football environment and would help me to get where I needed to go.โ
Martin said he had already โmade it clearโ to the Husker coaches before this weekend where he was planning to sign. He said that he still plans to call the Nebraska coaches this evening to let them know of his final decision.
The nationโs No. 26 rated inside linebacker prospect explained in depth more reasons why Nebraska was his pick.
The coaches had a lot to do with his decision to commit to the Big Red.
โThey showed me a lot of love,โ he said about the Husker staff. โThem being my first offerโthat was a risk they took. I wasnโt the greatest academic student, so they made a big risk in offering me. They took that risk. The payout is big now. Theyโre getting me and I get a chance to play.โ
Academically, Martin says that not only has he improved on his grades but his SAT score.
โIโm fine with that,โ he said about getting qualified for Nebraska. โIโve gotten my grades up a lot. Iโm not really worried about it. I did well on the SAT.โ
