Georges St-Pierre Making Case for Pound-for-Pound Champ

Eric RobertFeb 1, 2009

The fight between Georges St-Pierre and BJ Penn was hyped up to be one the biggest fights in UFC history.  Although it was not nearly as competitive as most fight fans were expecting, it did turn out to be historical, a night where GSP asserted himself as the pound for pound champ in all of MMA

St-Pierre, from Montreal, Quebec, Canada, walked right through an overmatched B.J. Penn on Saturday night, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. After some heavy trash talking leading up to the fight by B.J. Penn, which included calling GSP a quitter, the Hawaiian prodigy never came close to backing up those harsh words.

After a cautious first round by both fighters, GSP started pushing the pace in the second round. After a couple of failed takedowns, GSP finally overpowered B.J. and started to establish his dominant ground game. B.J. never had an answer for GSP's power and control on the canvas.

Round after round, GSP asserted himself and dominated B.J. in both his standup and ground game. The Canadian landed a punishing superman punch that imploded B.J.'s nose and seemed to give him all the confidence he needed to finish this fight.

St-Pierre was never in any kind of trouble, and looked just as fresh at the beginning of the fight as he did at the end of the fourth round, when B.J.'s corner finally said "mercy." B.J. said he was ready to fight to the death, and luckily for him, his corner didn't let that happen.

Georges St-Pierre once again showed the world of MMA that he must be considered one of the best the sport has ever seen. B.J. Penn, the lightweight champion, has fought up to 205lbs, and has never felt a beat down like he did on Saturday night.

St-Pierre made him look like a lightweight, which is no easy task. Anyone who has followed this sport over the past ten years, knows the skills B.J. Penn possesses. GSP's dominant performance goes a long ways towards cementing his reputation as the best pound for pound fighter in MMA today.
