Preakness 2012 Favorites: How Kentucky Derby Horses Will Fare This Weekend

Ryan RudnanskyJun 3, 2018

Three horses who raced in the 2012 Kentucky Derby will contend in the Preakness Stakes this year.

Hansen has dropped out, but Kentucky Derby winner I'll Have Another, Bob Baffert's Bodemeister and the consistent Creative Cause are still in the field.

Each horse has a good shot at capturing the 2012 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico, so let's take a look at each contender (complete with odds).

Creative Cause (10-1)

The Kentucky Derby was the first time Creative Cause had finished worse than third place in nine career starts. The colt was within striking distance down the stretch at Churchill Downs, but dropped back a bit before finishing fifth.

On the other hand, Creative Cause only lost by three lengths and is one of the most consistent horses in the field. He won the San Felipe Stakes in March.

Bodemeister (3-1)

The concerns about Bodemeister's race fitness were affirmed at the Kentucky Derby when Bodemeister lost the lead down the stretch to I'll Have Another. Unraced at 2 years old, Bodemeister still needs some work to legitimately win a long-distance race.

The good news is, the Preakness is a shorter race than the Kentucky Derby. Bodemeister is my pick to win it at Pimlico. Remember, he has two first-place finishes and two second-place finishes in 2012, and who can forget that victory by 9 1/2 lengths at the Arkansas Derby?

I'll Have Another (3-1)

I'll Have Another had won his first two races of 2012 before he entered the Kentucky Derby field. Still, he was given 15-1 odds.

Not any more. After his spectacular finish at Churchill Downs, I'll Have Another is officially a horse to be feared. Bodemeister was ahead by five lengths turning the corner for the final stretch, but I'll Have Another closed dramatically, resembling a horse capable of winning the Triple Crown.

I'll Have Another would be my favorite if I wasn't so high on Bodemeister.
