World Football's Biggest FAILs of the Week

Michael CummingsMay 14, 2012

It's all English Premier League all the time in this week's edition of B/R's World Football FAILs of the week.

Believe it or not, the weekend's Miracle in Manchester provided multiple fails, but the rest of the league was not immune.

Read on for details on Joey Barton's latest meltdown, one very presumptuous bookie, some awful goalkeeping, horrific new uniforms and a grumpy old coach in the Ukraine.

Bad Bookie

Manchester City won the English Premier League title over the weekend. Maybe you heard about it.

Anyway, bookie-slash-Manchester United fan Fred Done lost a lot of money on the game. That's because several weeks ago he paid out early on Manchester United as league winners.

Oopsie.

Let's stick with Manchester United for a moment, shall we?

It was a miserable week for the Red Devils, not least of all because of their horrific new kits.

Check it out in the photo at left.

What is that? Tablecloth?

Fulop the Flop

3 of 5

Outgoing West Bromwich Albion manager Roy Hodgson gave backup keeper Marton Fulop a place in the starting XI in the Baggies' final match of the season Sunday against Arsenal.

Big mistake.

Here's what the Daily Mail had to say about the debacle:

"

Marton Fulop is out of contract this summer. It would be no surprise, given the helping hand he gave Arsenal, if West Brom's second-choice goalkeeper gave Arsene Wenger a ring to enquire about a new one.

Thrust into the action because of a groin injury to Ben Foster, the Hungary international produced a performance of stupefying incompetence which enabled Robin van Persie and Co to claw their way into next season's Champions League.

"

"Stupefying incompetence" sounds like hyperbole, but it's really not.

Arsenal's first goal was all Fulop, who allowed a loose ball to roll around his own box long enough for Yossi Benayoun to scamper in and finish gleefully in an open net.

The Gunners' winner also owed plenty to the Hungarian. This time, Fulop flapped at a corner, punching it toward his own goal, where Laurent Koscielny applied the finishing touch.

Bonkers Barton

4 of 5

Back to the Miracle in Manchester.

If you watched the game, you'll remember that the late drama was preceded by a moment of amazing stupidity on the part of QPR's Joey Barton.

Barton retaliated to Carlos Tevez's cheap shot near the Manchester City box, but the only problem was, the referee only saw Barton's elbow to Tevez's face.

But he wasn't done. Barton quickly spread the love to Sergio Aguero as well.

The incident rightfully earned Barton a red card and a charge of violent conduct, and now the word is that his QPR career could be in jeopardy.

Then, of course, there was the mystifying feuds with Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker.

At this point, nothing Barton does would surprise me. Nothing at all.

Grumpy Old Man

Finally, I leave you with something from outside England.

This is Shakhtar Donetsk manager Mircea Lucescu and, yes, he's really angry that his players would dare celebrate their league title like that.

Nice team spirit, dude.
