Todd Haley Set To Become Chiefs New Head Coach

Bryan BrackneyFeb 1, 2009

The Chiefs are expected to name Todd Haley as their new head coach. Now, who is this guy, really?

He is the son of current Dolphins player personnel analyst Dick Haley. As a kid he was the Steelers ball boy. He also graduated from the University of North Florida in 1991. He is now 41 years old.

In 1995 he got a job as an assistant in the Jets' scouting department, where he made two future contacts: Bill Parcells and Ken Whisenhunt.

From 1997 to 2000 he was the Jets receivers coach, where he guided Keyshawn Johnson to two consecutive Pro Bowls. Before that he wasย a scout with the Jets.

During these years with Parcells, Haley's attitude clashed with the tuna. In 2000 Haley formed a bond with Whisenhunt, who was also on the Jets staff

From 2001 to 2003 he was the Bears receivers coach, and helped guide Marty Booker to the Pro Bowl in 2002, despite three different starting quarterbacks.

In 2004 and 2006 he was the Cowboys receivers coach. In 2006 Haley had a confrontation with Terrell Owens.

Owens missed the start of a practice and it blew up on him. Owens talked to reporters about how Haley needed to start trusting him, while Jerry Jones said the team could take action to discipline Haley.

This started the great departure of Parcells and his key disciples.

In 2007, Whisenhunt named him the Cardinals offensive coordinator. After a season in which three Cardinals receivers got over 1,000 yards, and the play of Larry Fitzgerald lead the Cards to the Super Bowl, Haley was on the radar for a head coaching gig.

Haley might not be the best man for the job. The Chiefs have a long way to go and Haley's temper could get him in trouble. If I were Scott Pioli, I would be looking at Leslie Frazier. He was under Tony Dungy, so he understands how to deal with pressure and loss.

Basically, what I mean to say is that the Chiefs are going to have another hard three or four years.
