Second-Year Breakout: Brandon Harris of the Houston Texans

Nate DunlevyJun 7, 2018

When looking at the 2011 draft for the Texans, it's difficult to find a good break-out candidate for 2012.

That's because most of them broke out in 2011.

J.J. Watt, Brooks Reed, and Taylor Yates all had monster seasons in 2011, so the candidates for second-year stardom are few.

In this case, we'll have to go with a player who needs to break out if he wants to keep a roster spot. Second-round pick Brandon Harris was an abject disappointment in 2011. He played in just eight games and was a healthy scratch on many occasions.

There were rumors that he was too slow to break into the regular rotation at corner. At one point, the Texans even considered moving him to safety.

This offseason, however, the door has been opened for him to step in and make an impact. The Texans lost corner Jason Allen, and didn't draft anyone to step in. Kareem Jackson has hardly lit the world on fire either. The Texans need production out of Harris.

If speed was in fact Harris' limitation, there's only so much he can do to improve. Unless his lethargy was due to being out of shape, the Texans may well have just flat missed on the pick. While adding plenty of other talented players last year eases that sting, it doesn't change the fact that the secondary has to be a concern for the coaching staff.

If Harris can find some wheels and crack the regular rotation even as a nickel back, the Texans will breathe a big sigh of relief.

No matter how he does it, Harris needs to find a way to get on the field and make a difference, or his second year with the Texans could well be his last.

Seven games and one tackle won't cut it in 2012.
