When some people make a mistake, the first response they have is to change the story or offer an explanation for the mistake. Sometimes they blame others for their own wrongdoing.
Usually when that happens, people lose respect for them because they know what happened and lying or working around the truth is simply the wrong way of doing things.
"Amendment 1 is ridiculous. It's an invasion of people's rights. North Carolina, why do you care if somebody wants to marry who they love? Same sex marriage should be legal. The fact that it's illegal is embarrassing."
"Divorce rate is at least 50% between men and women, so don't give me the values angle. Making same sex marriage illegal is the same as having segregated drinking fountains. Embarrassing. The human race is embarrassing. #evolve." - Lords of Pain
One fan disagreed with Punk about his stance on gay marriage saying that "Man was meant for woman, and even the thought of homo's make me sick."
CM Punk's response to this was not the most well thought out statement to come from his mouth as he told the fan to "kill himself."
Do you respect CM Punk for taking the blame for his comments?
As the day went on the story grew that Punk slandered a fan on Twitter. With the WWE's stance on anti-bullying, a WWE superstar bullying a fan is certainly a big story for writers to pick up on.
Instead of blasting Punk for his choice of words, I would like to credit Punk for being a man and stepping up and taking blame for what he said.
"I was pretty worked up today. The amendment 1 situation had me all wound up. I stand by my thoughts on gay marriage 100%. How I defended that stance was 100% wrong. I admit it. You can't stoop to others levels. Sometimes I fight fire with fire and it isn't ways the best way, I apologize."
"I don't want you to kill yourself. I want you to better yourself. Just as I want to better myself. I'll start by being the better man and once again, apologize for my harsh reaction to your opinion of homosexuals making you "sick." Sorry y'all. If I let anybody down, I apologize. I'll make it up to ya and move forward with a better understanding of others feelings.#pma."-Lords of Pain
Was Punk wrong for telling a fan to kill himself? Yes, he made a mistake. But instead of running away from it, Punk acknowledged his wrongdoing and apologized.
Sometimes we get defensive about something we feel strongly about. We say things we don’t mean or don' quite think through our thoughts completely before we say something. This is what happened to CM Punk. He is a human being like all of us. He makes mistakes just like we do.
The important thing is not how many mistakes you make or how severe they are, it’s what you do about those mistakes that separates the men from the cowards. CM Punk's response shows that he takes full blame for what he said. CM Punk is not someone who runs away from problems. He steps up and takes them head on. CM Punk is not a coward. CM Punk is a man.
