Albert Pujols Finally Hits His First Home Run of 2012
It took 110 at-bats, but Albert Pujols has finally gone yard for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (see the video here).
This marked the longest streak of his career, defeating his previous streak by five at-bats. He did that last season.
In the fifth inning, Pujols stepped up with Mike Trout on base and launched a two-run home run off of Blue Jays starter Drew Hutchinson.
Pujols was given the day off on Saturday and it seems to have done the trick for the game's most prolific slugger.
"This isn't anything more than just to try to break from banging your head against the wall and step back for a day," manager Mike Scioscia told Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com.
Pujols entered Sunday's game hitting just .194/.237/.269 with no home runs and just five RBI. This marks the latest in a season that he has ever been below the Mendoza Line.
Pujols hadn't driven in a run since April 15 and had walked just six times in 114 plate appearances prior to the game.
The biggest acquisition of this past offseason, Pujols will now look to go on a hot streak and silence the boos that he heard after Friday night's 0-for-4 performance.
Pujols is obviously the type of player who will put it all together very soon, and we may have just witnessed the beginning of the end of his slump.
