Georgia Football: 5 Weakest Positions to Worry About

Brian JonesApr 26, 2012

Fans of the Bulldogs know who the best players are on the team. Many would say Aaron Murray, Jarvis Jones and Bacarri Rambo would be the three players to watch this season because of what they did last year.

So that would make the quarterback, outside linebacker and free safety the strong positions on the team, right?

That is true for the quarterback and the outside linebacker spot, but because of Rambo's off-field issues, he will likely not play the first half of the regular season, which will leave fans concerned about that position.

But that is not the only position fans should worry about. There are five that will likely be weak for the Bulldogs this upcoming season, which should concern the fanbase.

Center

1 of 5

With Ben Jones gone, this will be a position that fans will pay close attention to.

David Andrews will get the start at center but he saw limited playing time last year. However, that could change because offensive line coach Will Friend will continue to experiment and see if he can find a bigger guy that can play center, according to AJC.com.

Some of the other players that could be snapping to Murray are Chris Burnette and Dallas Lee.

Left Guard

2 of 5

Kenarious Gates played left guard last year, but he will play left tackle this season because he has been the most consistent lineman throughout the entire spring season.

It looks like Dallas Lee will be the projected starter at left guard, who was solid last year until he suffered a broken leg halfway through the year.

This position should not be that weak if Lee is 100 percent, but it's a position to watch regardless, because Gates was as solid as it gets at left guard last year. If Lee can't go, the coaching staff could move Gates back to left guard.

Right Tackle

3 of 5

This is another position where the Bulldogs lose a key player. Justin Anderson started all 14 games last year at right tackle and was awarded Most Improved Player at the end of the year.

So that spot needs to be filled and Kolton Houston is the front-runner. Coaches and players love the way Houston worked during the spring and they are glad to have him back on the roster after being ruled ineligible by the NCAA.

With this being his first year as Bulldog, there is a concern if he can handle the opposing defensive lineman that will be coming at him each week. There is no depth at right tackle (or any offensive line position) so Houston is really all they have unless Friend shifts some players like he has in the past.

Cornerback

4 of 5

Both cornerback spots have the talent but lack the depth needed to make fans comfortable. Malcolm Mitchell has moved from wide receiver to cornerback and should be successful because he was recruited as a cornerback when he came to Georgia.

Sanders Commings and Branden Smith will also play corner, but Commings will be out the first two games due to a suspension. So expect Damian Swann and Blake Sailors to see action as well.

When the season begins on September 1, Mitchell and Swann will likely be the starting corners. That's not alarming because the Bulldogs are playing against Buffalo. But Missouri is right after that game, so Mitchell and the rest of the group need to have a big day to make the fans feel good about the position.

Free Safety

5 of 5

Baccari Rambo will miss at least the first four games of the season. The Bulldogs will need to find a replacement until he returns (that's saying if he returns).

So starting in his place could be either Corey Moore or Connor Norman—depending on who has the better preseason camp.

Moore played well in spring, so he has a slight edge. But, the reality is there is little depth at free safety and the young players have to step up. There is no telling what is going to happen to Rambo once his drug-related situation is dealt with.
