College Football 2012 Top 150 Players: No. 143 Seth Doege, Texas Tech QB

Michael FelderJun 7, 2018

Yesterday, we were in the Lone Star State talking about Ryan Swope, the standout wide receiver for the Texas A&M Aggies. We are staying in the state of Texas for our next player, Seth Doege from Texas Tech.

No. 143: Seth Doege, No. 7, Quarterback, Texas Tech

Doege is getting ready to start his second season at the helm of the Red Raiders offense. After Taylor Potts graduated, Doege took over the team for Tommy Tuberville's second season.

Breaking News

The team averaged more than 33 points a game but failed to reach a bowl for the first time since 1999, Spike Dykes' final year.

This year, the Red Raiders are looking to go bowling, and they have a trigger man capable of getting them back into the postseason.

Strengths

Doege is a trigger man. The type of guy that you want when you're running the pass-happy scheme headed by offensive coordinator Neal Brown.

The rising senior is quick on the throw, makes good decisions and can get the ball down the field in a hurry. Simply put, Doege does his job very well.

He threw for over 4,000 yards in 2011 and will come back looking to improve upon that in 2012. Doege has a great understanding of this Texas Tech scheme, and that is probably his biggest asset to the Red Raiders.

As a junior, he showed poise, an ability to make the correct reads and in the team's biggest moment of the year, he was superb.

Weaknesses

While Doege was huge for the Red Raiders in their big win over Oklahoma in 2011, that effort was sandwiched by two less-than-stellar performances.

Poor decision-making and risk-taking characterized his showings against both Kansas State and Iowa State, before and after his OU explosion. Two games that accounted for half of the 10 interceptions that Doege threw on the season.

Consistency is something he must improve upon if he wants to get the Red Raiders into a bowl game and into the top half of the Big 12 in his senior campaign.

2012 Predictions

The Red Raiders have a slew of wide receivers back to which Doege can spread the ball around. Five of the top six pass-catchers come back, and the offense is ready to go in Lubbock.

The landscape of the Big 12 changes a bit, adding TCU and WVU while losing Texas A&M and Missouri. But for Texas Tech, expectations are the same: Get to the seven-or-so-win mark and go to a solid bowl game.

Expect Doege to surpass his 2011 numbers in passing, as he and his receivers have built a solid understanding of one another. Darrin Moore is healthy, and that gives Doege a premier target.
