First Look at the Philadelphia Eagles Offseason

What a season!

Despite the way things looked early on this year, the Eagles managed to turn things around and give us a great ride.

Obviously we would have preferred things end differently, but there were many positive things to move forward with. We learned a lot about our defense, especially in regards to some of our younger guys. We found out (yet again) that McNabb still has a lot of gas left in the tank, as do Dawkins and other key players.

So where do we go from here? What does next season hold for this team?

Well, we're going to need to make some moves in the off season, and we're going to have to make some tough decisions. There is no doubt that McNabb and Reid will both be back next year so lets leave that alone. The real question is what are we going to do with guys like Brian Dawkins, who once again returned to Pro Bowl form, but is getting older every day. Dawkins is the emotional leader of our defense, and I have to think as long as the man can still play that he'll be around.

How about at tight end? Brent Celek showed a lot of improvement this year and really came on down the stretch. How does this bode for L.J Smith, who hasn't been very productive lately? Considering he will be an unrestricted free agent, I wouldn't expect to see him return next year.

I think the big question now is what we are going to do at wide receiver. DeSean Jackson is going to be a star in this league, no doubt about it, and Kevin Curtis is a reliable down field threat, but after that it drops off.

Jason Avant can be a big play guy, but has been too inconsistent, and Brown and Lewis havn't been contributing at all as of late. Whether it be through the draft or free agency, this team needs to make a big move at this position. A key addition here and this team could really get dangerous.

I know it's tempting to hang around and sulk about the way this season ended, and no doubt it will leave a taste in our mouths for a long time, but the best thing for this team is to move on and start thinking about next year. We have to find a way to get better for 2009. We have to find a way to make the adjustments necessary to finally get over the hump and bring a title to Philly.

These team has the talent and the chemistry to do it, but could use a few more pieces to finish the puzzle. No matter what happens over the next few months, it's going to be an exciting 2009.
