Greg Robinson Hired as Michigan's Defensive Coordinator

Ryan JelleyJan 20, 2009

After about a month of searching Rich Rodriguez finally named the new defensive coordinator for the Michigan Wolverines, it's former Syracuse head coach Greg Robinson. The hiring comes as a bit of surprise as many expected Michigan Assistant Jay Hopson to take the role.

Although Robinson didn't experience a lot of success as head coach going 10-37 as Head Coach of Syracuse, he has had numerous success as a defensive-coordinator winning two Super Bowls with the Denver Broncos and a Rose Bowl victory with Texas.

Robinson not only brings a great defensive mind to Michigan but also is regarded as a great recruiter. With stops at Texas and UCLA throughout his career Robinson has been able to form relationships with coaches in those state that should greatly benefit the Wolverines when trying to recruit from them in future years.

Texas Head Coach Mack Brown was one of many that endorsed Robinson's hire and this is what he had to say about the hire, "I'm excited for Greg and Laura to join the great Michigan tradition and happy for Rich, his staff and the Wolverine program because they're getting a super family and one of the best defensive coordinators in the country.

"Greg's a high energy, creative, hard-working guy who has had success at both the NFL and collegiate levels.

"He's a veteran coach with a wealth of knowledge who the players really respond to. His season here in 2004 produced one of the best defenses in Texas history and helped set the stage for our National Championship season in 2005."

Aside from the Rose Bowl victory and Super Bowl victories Robinson has a perfect 8-0 record in Bowl Games while he held the positions of DL coach and Offensive Coordinator while at UCLA.
