Masters Predictions 2012: Top Players Who Won't Keep Pace at Augusta

Wes ODonnellJun 7, 2018

It is unfair to pick on Adam Scott, but the world's No. 13 player is off to a rough start at Augusta and is already as many as five shots off the field.

He's not the only top player struggling, either. The world's No. 5 player, Steve Stricker, is over par. Meanwhile, Jason Day, who tied with Scott for second a year ago, is over par.

Fortunately, nobody in the field has run away from them yet.

Day, Stricker and even Scott are still in striking distance, and this is still only the first day of the tournament.

Not everybody will be able to stay in striking distance, though, and soon enough even some of the world's best will fall off the pace.

Adam Scott

He seems content to go back and forth trading bad holes for decent holes.

He hit as low as plus-four before holing out on the eighth, but quickly gave one back on the very next hole.

Last year, he made his run and was in position for a possible win before Charl Schwartzel caught fire.

This year, it looks like he'll have to work mighty hard just to make the cut.

Padraig Harrington

The 40-year-old Irishman is a three-time major winner, but has never finished better than fifth at the Masters.

He got off to a hot start today with an eagle at two, but then dropped back even before getting back under.

Paddy is always a fan favorite, but he hasn't won a major since 2008 and was cut in each of the last two years at Augusta.

Hopefully he hangs around, but it is not likely.

Martin Kaymer

One of the best players in the world, and one of the hottest in the sport right now, Kaymer has never made the cut at Augusta.

He's looked great at times today and he's dropped off, so it is tough to get a feel for what he's going to do.

One thing we do know is that history does not favor him. It wouldn't be surprising at all to see him fall away, even if he does finally make the cut.
