WWE WrestleMania 28: Power Ranking the Top 5 Feuds This WrestleMania Season

Alfred KonuwaJun 7, 2018

The proverbial Jello has pretty much settled in terms of the WrestleMania picture.  By now, if you don't have a feud, you're not going to have a match.

With just over one week left until the biggest wrestling show of the year, why not take a look at those who do have feuds and assess how effective said feuding has been thus far.

The top three matches on the card have received the majority of TV time, and rightfully so, but does this mean they have been effective enough in delivering the goods to justify their top billing?

Ninety percent of a successful WrestleMania lies in the buildup, and if this truly will be a record-breaking pay-per-view offering, the top feuds need to tell an enticing story.

5. Team Teddy vs. Team Johnny

1 of 5

The WWE has done a good job showcasing the animosity between John Laurinaitis and Teddy Long as each power-hungry general manager migrates onto the other's show in an ongoing game of oneupsmanship.

The fact that neither GM's team has been announced in full has helped the build as it stretches out interest.  Ratings trends have been favorable as the feud gets deeper into its hype, and the idea of having one GM for both RAW and SmackDown is still quite unique thereby making every pinfall in an otherwise crowded match matter.

4. Cody Rhodes vs. Big Show

2 of 5

The feud between Cody Rhodes and the Big Show doesn't at all seem forced which is uncommon to most feuds involving the Big Show during WrestleMania season.

This is a classically built pro wrestling conflict with the heel getting all the heat leading into the card, yet there is a twist as a significantly smaller Rhodes continues to get heel heat over Show.

Rhodes teasing Big Show for his past WrestleMania failures is a very savvy way to gain sympathy for a man who could conceivably crush Rhodes with his bare hands.

With one week left until WrestleMania and all the momentum in Rhodes' corner, a result of either Big Show or Cody Rhodes going over clean would make sense.  A win for Big Show would mean Rhodes gets his comeuppance, while a win for Rhodes would keep the young star hot.

3. CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho

3 of 5

This feud started out kind of slow, but continues to gain momentum with Jericho's pinpoint performances while he taunts Punk's family.

The fact that both of Jericho's tasteless rants against CM Punk's father and sister came via satellite add to the idea of the two eventually meeting in person so that Punk can finally get his hands on Jericho.

CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho is already the best wrestling match on the card on paper, but the competent storytelling in the past few weeks has added a much-needed dimension to a dream matchup.

2. John Cena vs. The Rock

4 of 5

The Rock has been up and down throughout his war of words with John Cena as Cena closes the gap with the Great One on the microphone.

Still, Rock has delivered strong promos, and the the perceived legit tension between the two has translated into compelling television from week to week.

Cena and Rock have barely touched one another since Cena took a Rock Bottom in November, and this pattern should persist through the go-home show when the two are scheduled to once again come face to face live.

Cena's insistence on knocking on the fourth wall has taken away from the feud as he is in turn marginalizing a good chunk of WWE fans not in "the know," but by the same token it enhances the aforementioned tension.

Ratings for RAW have not gone past the 3.3 mark despite the Rock appearing on four consecutive shows deep into WrestleMania season, which could either be an indictment on the feud itself or an indication that fans are already ready for WrestleMania.  Only time will tell.

1. The Undertaker vs. Triple H

5 of 5

From the moment Triple H announced that he would be waiting for the Undertaker the night after WrestleMania 28, the feud between these two future hall of famers has been spectacular.

Triple H's reticence to face the Undertaker because he doesn't want to destroy the Undertaker's brand adds an element of realism given Triple H's real-life role as the Executive Vice President of Talent.  These dynamics also combine to speak to the possibility of Triple H possibly ending the streak.

The infusion of Shawn Michaels as a special guest referee also puts the streak in jeopardy, as the WWE has cleverly leapfrogged the annual dilemma of building a match for the Undertaker at WrestleMania that fans actually think he could lose all while setting the stage for a possible Hunter-Shawn encounter at WrestleMania 29.

The mix-and-match exchanges between Triple H, Shawn Michaels, and the Undertaker have kept the feud fresh, and the first ever outdoor Hell in a Cell will be something to behold.
