St. Louis Cardinals' False Start

Daniel ShoptawJan 15, 2009

I thought I'd write today about the news in Derrick Goold's Twitter feed that the Cardinals were interested in Kris Benson. I figured I'd look up numbers, toss in the whole Anna Benson/chemistry bit, talk about the reputation the Cards have for people with a less checkered background, etc.

All of which went by the wayside with the latest Tweet from Goold that says that asking the front office about this "didn't move the needle." Either they aren't that interested or they are pretty solid poker players. You have to hope it's the former.

I was a fan of Benson during his Pirate days and have wanted the Cardinals to grab him in the past, but unless he's coming in on a minor-league contract, he's not what the Cardinals need right now.

Over at the Post-Dispatch site, Jeff Gordon has an article up about cutting John Mozeliak a little slack. Can't argue with that one, especially with the examples he cites.  It'd be nice if some of these dedicated ownership/management bashers would take a step back and realize how things have improved in the last couple of years.

Looks like Andruw Jones is going to be waived by the Dodgers. If the Cardinals weren't already so stocked with outfielders, he might be worth a flyer. Sounds like he'll be back in Atlanta soon.

Houston is going with a $107 million payroll, which is "a number, quite frankly, that the revenues don't support," according to their general manager. It's an old ranking, but this shows Houston as 16th in market size and St. Louis as 25th.

Yet St. Louis is going to have a payroll fairly comparable to the Astros. Just another mark in the "ownership really isn't that cheap" column.

Now less than a month until spring training!  Non-roster invitees should be announced soon and hopefully more news will be made as they finalize the roster.  Baseball is coming!
