WWE Odd Pairings: Top 10 Successful Mismatched Tag Teams
For decades, the WWE has provided us with tag teams that have broken the mold.
Some of the teams were legendary for their chemistry, popularity, and title reigns. Teams like Demolition, The Hardys, The Hart Foundation, and Edge and Christian, were legendary pairings.
However, the WWE also put teams together that made fans scratch their heads. Some of these teams failed miserably, while others were not only popular, but were able to land the coveted tag titles.
This article will focus on the teams that no one saw coming. These odd pairings were not only successful but popular all rolled into one.
Keep in mind, I may have missed your favorite odd pairing. If that's the case, feel free to weigh in on the comments section.
Don't forget: if you enjoy this article, don't be shy and become a fan.
Rock 'n' Sock Connection
1 of 10This team of Mankind and The Rock is one of the most revered odd pairings in WWE history.
Not only were these two men at the top of their game when they formed, but their chemistry was unparallelled.
After all was said and done, these former foes wound up becoming three-time WWE tag team champions.
Owen Hart and Yokozuna
2 of 10Heading into WrestleMania XI, Owen Hart was determined to land tag team gold.
So much so that he challenged then-champions The Smoking Gunns to a match at "The Granddaddy of Them All." The only problem for The Gunns was that Hart didn't name his partner.
Turns out this mystery partner would help guarantee Owen would succeed, but the two would go on to hold the titles for several months.
Hart and Yokozuna finished their partnership with two title reigns and during their time were considered one of the more dominant teams.
Stone Cold Steve Austin and Various Partners
3 of 10Throughout his career, Austin found himself paired with several wrestlers that kept fans guessing.
In fact, with the exception of Brian Pillman and Triple H, Austin often found himself paired with someone he was feuding with.
Even with the disdain that Austin/Michaels, Austin/Undertaker, and Austin/Dude Love had for each other, they would ultimately, find success as a team.
Each of these teams not only won the tag titles, but successfully defended them as well.
Mega Powers
4 of 10These two may have been one of the most unlikely pairings in WWE history.
Hogan had been the company's top face for several years, while Macho Man had primarily been a heel.
At this point, Savage was in the midst of a turn and found himself on the receiving end of an attack from The Honky Tonk Man and The Hart Foundation.
Just when things looked bleak, The Hulkster came out to save the day.
This team was very over with the fans, but they never became tag champs. In the end, Savage's jealousy would ultimately tear this team apart and the two would collide at WrestleMania V.
Kane and X-Pac
5 of 10Kane and X-Pac were polar opposites, yet the WWE felt there may be something there.
Even though the pair held the gold for over a month, X-Pac would break ties with the 'Big Red Machine."
Adding insult to injury, not only did X-Pac turn on his former running mate, he also stole his love interest, Tori.
Booker T and Goldust
6 of 10Booker T and Goldust were a very odd pairing.
However, no matter how much Booker initially resisted their partnership, Goldust would not waver.
Goldust stayed loyal, even while Booker T was being courted to join the nWo.
Then, once Booker T was unceremoniously removed from the faction, he and Goldust started their official run and eventually gained the ultimate prize.
Hurri-Kane
7 of 10Kane and The Hurricane were brothers behind masks.
Even though their identities were hidden, these two found a way to gel and become tag champs.
Ultimately, this partnership was short-lived as the two broke up not long after they lost the tag titles.
Booker T and RVD
8 of 10What do you do with two proven singles wrestlers and only so many top spots available?
You make them a tag team, of course.
Like their title reign, this team was also short-lived, as both men moved on to become main eventers and land singles gold.
John Cena and Shawn Michaels
9 of 10Shawn Michaels and John Cena were headed on a collision course.
Cena was WWE champ and Michaels wanted to hold the gold once again. However, this evening the two needed to be on the same page as they faced the tag team champs.
In the end, they would go on to become tag champions and hold the gold for two months.
Miz and R-Truth
10 of 10The Miz and R-Truth separately felt they were being screwed by the WWE.
Ultimately, the two would join forces.
They felt there was a bigger piece to the puzzle, stopping them from reaching their true potential. This team had a solid run and was very over with the fans.
In fact, had it not been for R-Truth's suspension for violating the Wellness Policy, the two may have become tag champs.
